Article 14 Apr 2010.
(Précis of a newsletter article from Alan Ronalds: “Moving Forwards”)
Currently I have a "Grand Plan". Yes it is to convert to HD operations. The plan has two prongs. Firstly I will work to finish several Standard Definition projects. Secondly, I am buying HD equipment stage by stage: Camera, player, and editing software. I have already bought a camera. I do not trust LCD screens to work if the sun shines on them, and so I searched for a camera with a viewfinder. They are RARE these days, and you have to pay extra.
It seems that present day manufacturers are obsessed with Optical Image Stabilisers, Intelligent (current cliché) Contrast Control, face detection, and Intelligent (that word again) Scene Selection.
Some potential use, perhaps, but I much prefer an EVF (Electronic ViewFinder) as backup. The EVF has been sacrificed in favour of gimmicks.
So this summer Bruce and I (Clan Ranald) will collect HD footage of the Quantocks with a view to editing in the autumn. We have to get used to composing in 16:9.
The BluRay player has just arrived. It upscales nicely. It plays all of my existing DVDs
especially the ones the club's equipment failed to play. It is a well-reviewed Panasonic
BD80.
I would query the HDMI statement in the March/April Newsletter. The HDMI cable
supplied has high-grade oxygen-free copper conductor, gold plated connecters, and
triples shielding from interference. No problems.
